The underlined/highlighted areas below are links to websites. Just click on them to go there. This document describes the Amtrak Rail Pass program and our trip but it will also serve as our itinerary as we travel along with an easy way to click on upcoming links without having the search them out. We'll be tweaking it before and during our trip to make it more accurate so check back at the end of January for the final/more accurate version. Our itinerary is at the top of this post and the description of the Amtrak Rail-Pass program is at the bottom of this post.

Amtrak Rail-Pass Program & Train info
- 15-day Rail-Pass 8-Segment costs $459
- 30-day Rail-Pass 12-Segment costs $689
- 45-day Rail-Pass 18-Segment costs $899
- Kids under 12 Rail-Pass are 1/2 price
I had to work a bit to adjust the potential schedule to keep it within the 15 day time-frame and still do as much as we want to do. It's difficult to line up the trains because their arrival/departure times are so far apart, some trains don't travel daily and others get into the terminals in the wee hours when you don't like to get on or off. You have a total of 15 days and 8 segments (each time you get off the train you start a new segment). Our irwerary above will allow us to do all of the western east/west trains in that time-frame. Our Amtrak Rail-pass Trip Map link shows the trip we've planned. You can use the "MultiCity" tab on Amtrak's website to help you piece together a schedule but the Multi-City function only lets you look at 4 segments so you have to copy and paste the itineraries somewhere and then piece them together for when you call an agent to actually make the Rail-Pass reservations for your trip. Using the Multi-City function does ensure the schedule you think you want will actually work so it's definitely useful for planning. You need to buy the Rail-Pass before you can actually make the reservations on the trains but you can do that over the phone at the same time as you make the reservations. If you buy the Rail-Pass online you will get a "reservation number" to use when making your reservations and don't need to pick up up the actual Rail-Pass till the day of travel. You don't want to wait till the last minute to get your reservations cause the Rail Pass is only good for the "Saver" level fares and when they sell out the Rail-Pass holder will have to pay the difference between "Saver" fare and whatever is available. You can create your itinerary on your own but then you have to call the Amtrak 800-number and speak to a agent to actually book the travel using the Rail Pass number to pay. You have a whole year to use the Rail Pass before actually making reservations, but once you make the reservations you only have 6 months/180 days to use it. Since you can buy the pass and make the reservation at the same time via the Phone there is no reason/advantage to buy the pass until you are ready to make the reservations. You can't make the Rail Pass reservations online. You have to make the reservations via a phone call to an agent or at the station and explain that you will use the Rail Pass to pay for it. You can cancel or change reservations as often as you want but have to pay the difference if the "Saver" fares aren't available. Nothing much matters till the minute
your 1st train departs. Getting on that train triggers the start of your 15-day Rail Pass time line and it doesn’t stop till the 15 days run out. Each calendar day counts as part of your 15 days even if there is only a couple minutes left in that day. So if you get on at 11:59 on Friday your 1st day of the 15 is Friday even through your itinerary only used 1 minute of it. Tip...if your desired trip is a little over the 15 day timeframe consider planning to go as far as possible within the 15 days and just paying for an individual ticket for the part that would have been over the 15 days. Same thing for the first part of the trip. Some trains depart a few minutes before midnight taking up that day of your 15 day Rail-pass. Consider buying a separate ticket to the first stop after midnight and use your Rail-pass from that point forward. You'll only pay a few bucks but get a whole extra day on your Rail-pass. Train Boarding & Seating....It's important to be at the terminal departure gate at least 30 minutes early because many trains begin boarding that early and it's often "first come/first serve" with regard to seat selection. Sit mid-car so you aren't awakened by the noise from opening/closing of the doors as folks move from car to car. Also sit a couple rows away from the stairways that lead to the restrooms/exit.
Amtrak Baggage Policy -You can take 2 personal items on the train in addition to the two 50-pound carry ons and two 50-pound checked bags. One of my carry-ons is always a computer-bag size with a shoulder strap that can be used for an overnight bag and the other a smallish(12-pac)soft sided cooler or backpack. That's a lot of baggage to lug around! We're taking one large roll-on carry-on plus the 2 personal items.
Bags to pack.....Each of us will pack all "our individual" stuff into one rolling suitcase each. One of us will also carry a soft sided 12-pack cooler. We'll pack the dry-food items into our large rolling bag with our clothes or our personal bag with our electronics so we don’t have to have another bag to carry around. Each of us will have a second bag for our electronics and for using as an overnight-bag when we leave our large bag at the terminal for overnight stops. The carry-on for overnights needs to be something like a small backpack and not a roll-around since we will likely carry it with us while sightseeing. We'll have tons of time to repack things on the train before each stop. Laundry can be done every couple days at the AIRBNBs.
Food on the train....Diner Car Menus & prices We plan to bring most our foods for each segment. We can always eat on the train and when we stop so we don't need to worry too much but I like to save as much as possible unless there's something worthwhile to spend it on. Train food is kind of a cross between airline food and Applebees, decent but nothing to write home about. All that being said....since I'm basing my opinion on 2 shorter previous trips, and the remarks of others on the train forum, we plan to sample some of the Amtrak Dining Car meals on this trip so we can report back our personal experiences.
Bring a small soft sided cooler....Each car has its own ice water dispenser so bring a mug to fill and maybe some kind of drink mix to add to it. The Lounge will give you a glass of Ice any time you ask. The Lounge car sells drinks but they're not cheap. $2 for a small soda or coffee and $5 - $6 for beer or wine! I am hoping to eat lesson the train and splurge when we get off;-) The train does not offer replenishment ice (other than a glass at a time) but they make occasional stops long enough to go inside the terminal where we can likely get ice from the stand-alone soft drink dispenser in the terminal's fast food places if we buy a drink. The New Orleans & LA terminals have a "Subway" franchise where we can buy a foot-long to take care of the first day's meals supplemented by our snacks. This trip is in the winter and we may be able to simply break off some icicles at the stops for replenishment ice;-) We won't have many refrigerated items so one small cooler should be plenty. On our 2 week trip we are planning to eat our "bring-along" foods for approximately 5 each breakfasts, lunches and dinners. We can always freeze a couple bottled waters at the AirBNBs to pack in our cooler.
Foods we'll take....We have started trying to figure out what kinds of foods we can get ready ahead of time and what to buy or prepare at the last minute. By thinking about that well ahead of the trip you can provision a little at a time. Think small/compact and no refrigeration. Tortillas instead of bread, spam like stuff for sandwiches. Nuts, dried fruit, canned foods, dry sausage, apples, bananas, celery, peanut butter, nutrition/granola bars, sardines/mackerel, tuna pouches, individual condiments,Indian Dry Kachori, Beef Jerky.....you get the idea.
In summary.....One of us will carry-on a small12-pack soft-side cooler and we will each haveonelargerollingcarry-onplus a small backpack sized bag large enough to hold a single change of clothing & toiletries along with our electronics & valuables.
Baggage Storage....Los Angeles, Sacramento and Seattle have Temporary Bag Storage where you can leave a bag in an attended storage area for $4 a day while you sightsee. Chicago has storage lockers that cost $12-$18 per 24 hours. New Orleans has no storage or lockers but we'll have our vehicle there to store the bags in.
Long Term Parking....New Orleans Union Station has long term parking very close (50-150 ft) to the terminal for $10 per day. We'll drive up to the front door, unload the bags and then I'll park and come meet my sister at the front door. Parking can be an issue at other cities so find out what the deal is ahead of time.
Clothes to pack....It will be a winter trip so we won't be sweating or getting dirty so we can probably wear the same stuff foreach train segment. The longest will be the 3 days/nights we are on the train and we can do laundry at one or more of our overnight stops so we won't need too many clothes. Most AIRBNBs have a washer/dryer. So we'll only need a complete change at our 5 overnight stops when we get a shower. So if we do laundry we can easily get away with 3 complete changes (1 of which we will be wearing). Think layers....I'm thinking I'll bring 3 pairs of jeans, 3 tee shirts,1 set of thermals, a flannel overshirt, a hooded sweatshirt, 2pair of socks, toiletries, a single small thin towel that can dry while laying on my bag in the overhead storage. That ought to leave plenty of room for my toiletries, blanket & travel pillow in my large bag & I'll still have room in the bag for some additional food items.
Sleeping on the train....Coach seating on the train is much better and more spacious than 1st-class on a plane. You can't reach the seat in front of you and there are only 2 seats on each side of the train. The seat has an adjustable recline to just less than horizontal and has an adjustable leg and foot rest. It's like sleeping in a Lazy-Boy recliner. Most of the east west trains are less than full and its typical to find 2 seats and sleep crossways in them with the conductor allowing it without you having to ask. The long distance western trains also have sleeping compartments but the price is HIGH!!!An example is...a Coachticket on the Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Los Angeles costs $242 and the sleeper costs between $783 & $1085.So it'scheaper to get off and sleep in a high end hotel! The problem is that you'd be getting back on the train at the same time the following day and still have to deal with the night time. Amtrak Sleeping Accommodations can be added to your Rail-pass if you pay the difference in the ticket price. Sleeper accommodations will easily (at least) double your trip's cost but the meals, showers, meal time choice, and lounge rooms in some terminals are included if that's any consolation to you. Sleeper shower link. However, the cheaper Roomettes are not for the claustrophobic. At 3.5ft X 6.5 ft they are probably better than coach for sleeping but maybe not as good as coach for the rest of the time.
Recharging electronics....There are standard 120-volt plug outlets just like home all over the tran. In addition to at each seat they are also in all the restrooms and in the Observation, Diner and Lounge cars. WiFi....Very few trains have WiFi and many of the terminals
don't either. If you have an iPhone or something similar with it's own WiFi Hotspot you will have Wifi where there is Cell Phone service. There are a few dead zones for the typical cell phone company throughout the west in particular and all over the country to a lesser degree. Bring a book to occupy you during the dead-zones(?).
Other stuff we plan to take.....baby wipes, sleep-aid pills, small travel pillow, large enough blanket to cover me head to foot and medium-heavy (fleece throw) because it will be cold (but we'll be wearing clothes too), iPad, iPhone and charging cords, pen and pad to take notes, insulated coffee mug (at least 24 oz), eating utensils & small knife and a thermos. ***Don't ask don’t tell items....a bottle of booze in case we want to mix a drink. A small plug-in hot water heater to make coffee/tea under the coach seat table or in the bathroom
where it can't be seen. Just heat the water and put it in the thermos for coffee, oatmeal, Ramon noodles.....
Amtrak Guest Reward Points....Points for Rail-Pass travel do not automatically appear. You must call Amtrak Guest Rewards after the travel and provide them (800-307-5000) with the Reservation number(s) to get credit for the travel and have them posted. Cost...15 day Rail-Pass tickets cost $459 each and I am counting on the 5 AIRBNB nights to cost no more than $75 each (including UBER to & from)so a total of $375.The 15 days of long term parking will cost $150. That's about $1450 combined cost for the 2 of us or $725 each. I'm sure we can eat for a lot less than $275 each for the 2 weeks since we will be taking a lot of food with us and buying food at grocery stores. So the entire 2-week trip should cost well less than $1000 each (maybe as little as $800!!!)
